Eat
Thumbs Up: Soul Burger

What is it?

If you love a good burger but also love real, wholesome food made by people who actually give a damn, then you’ve got to get to Soul Burger. Their’s is a burger joint with a difference, offering what they call a flexitarian menu, that is, both vegetarian and meat-based options, where the animal products are sourced from farmers who treat their animals humanely. According to the good folk at Soul Burger, our food system is broke (agreed!) and they intend to be part of the solution.

Ethical credentials

These guys have gone to great lengths to ensure the meat, eggs and dairy that goes into their food come from animals which have been treated well and have had a good life.

Their beef comes from cows that are grass fed and finished and are never confined in feedlots. Their pig products come from pigs that are born and raised on pasture and their chicken and eggs come from true free range farms where the animals have access to the outdoors and are able to exhibit their natural behaviours. Their milk is supplied by Barambah Organics who go above and beyond the organic standards to ensure the humane treatment of their cows and bobby calves. You can find out more on their website: http://www.soulburger.com.au/our-food/.

How does it taste?

Soooooo much better than the plastic crap you get at other burger joints – I won’t name names but you know what I’m referring to. I had the mushroom burger (field mushroom, grilled haloumi, roasted pepper, lettuce, tomato, lemon mayo and pesto) while my hubby opted for the cow (grass-fed beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard aoli, tomato relish). Both were delish – full of flavour, satisfying and no sickly feeling post ingestion. The red fries (tangy seasoned, thick-cut beer battered fries with aoli) were great too. Let’s hope that Soul Burger is the fast food of the future. We’ll definitely be back!
